While very beautiful, the large hunks are not the kind of sea glass that I typically drill through, because the thicker piece of sea glass can wear out a drill bit more quickly than a thinner, flatter sea glass piece.

All drilling, even for multiple projects, should be done at the same time. Drilling is an extensive process that requires some setup and takedown, and it is best done all in one shot. Gather together the sea glass pieces you would like to drill.

Choosing the Piece

When sorting, keep in mind that the thicker the piece the more difficult, time-consuming, and bit-consuming the process. Therefore, it is best to gather pieces that have a thinner, flatter surface. An example of a sea glass piece whose thickness creates a higher level of difficulty would be a piece that shows a thicker rim line running through it. Rim lines, bottle bottoms, and bottle lips all have a condensed “mound” of glass that can be difficult to bore through.

Make sure you have the proper tools for drilling. We recommend buying a high-speed, electric rotary drilling tool such as a Dremel.
